If you had pets, do you remember your parents detailing the virtues of taking your aging, and often failing, pets to the farm? This mysterious farm that had acres and acres of open fields filled with mice that your cats could play with or tennis balls your dogs could catch. You thought, “I don’t want to give up my beloved friend, but if (s)he is going to be happier, then who am I to stop this?” You let them go, comforted by the fact that your pet would be better off. It’s Not You, It’s Me
July 9, 2010Living in Northeast Ohio, it was like a volcano erupted last night. I don’t mean it just rushed through and wiped out everyone in the area, it was like a volcano erupted many miles away, but still in sight. We all felt something rush through us, like earthquakes and tremors triggered by the explosion.
I know personally, my chest tightened, my legs tingled, and I had this overwhelming sense that something was going to be missing for the next few years. Read the rest of this entry »

LeBron James to the Chicago Bulls. And how.
June 25, 2010Since we have spent the last year or so wading through the murky waters of free agency, don’t you think it’s about time we started drawing some conclusions?
But before we come to any real conclusions, a little role play. Imagine yourself as Cavaliers general manager Chris Grant. In just your second week on the job you are faced with the prospect of having to trade away the best player in franchise history in a do or die sign and trade, or watch the two time and defending league MVP simply leave town as an unrestricted free agent. Of course, there is also the possibility of resigning him, but I think the chances of that are very small.
Glad I’m not that guy.
Conclusion #1: The only one that really matters.
Visit Miami-Wade County July 1-7
June 16, 2010Hey Paints in the Point readers. I know it has been a long time since we last talked. I’m currently in South Africa volunteering for the FIFA World Cup (where no one cares about the NBA Finals, nor is it broadcast on TV, especially with the World Cup action — or lack thereof), but that doesn’t mean I’m not trying to keep up with sporting news from the States.
In a fairly desperate attempt to keep 2010 free agent Dwyne Wade in Miami, Miami-Dade County Commissioners voted unanimously to rename the county to “Miami-Wade County” for the first week of the NBA free agency period. Read the rest of this entry »

Take the Future

He stands about 6’8”, maybe 6’9” depending on the purpose of the statement, weighs 200 and who knows how many pounds. He is a tremendous athlete, has had various acrobatic highlights and can play a few positions. He may very determine the future of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Clearly, this is far too overt a description to be LeBron James. No, this is JJ Hickson. Read the rest of this entry »
Smoke Over Cleveland

Sad. Pathetic. Embarrassing. Woeful. That was the Cavaliers last night, especially in the last minute of the ball-game. They looked so clearly the weaker team. They didn’t even put as much of a fight up as Miami did, and they went whimpering into the night. Read the rest of this entry »
The Path Isn’t Paved

First, a note to those who are ripping LeBron in northeast Ohio: shut up. Did he play poorly? Definitely. Did he lose a bit of aggression? It appears to be the case. But this doesn’t make sense. The last 7 years have been the best Cleveland basketball has ever seen and the worst thing that could happen is for LeBron to leave. So your response is? Booing and labeling him as the source of your losing when a lot of the responsibility lies on his teammates for not defending or making shots. Could he have played better? Absolutely, but this isn’t going to help your cause this year or in the ensuing offseason. He deserves to be criticized for his performance, it was bad. He hasn’t had too many of those in his career, although “3″ seems a bit under the truth. I expect him to come out guns blazing in game 6, otherwise the Cavs will be cast aside this season and possibly for the next several. Read the rest of this entry »
Want and Need
May 10, 2010Why do people continually write off this Boston Celtics team? I don’t understand what the rush is to cast them as has-beens when they can still compete at the highest level. Read the rest of this entry »

Are the Clouds Closer?
April 23, 2010First off, this isn’t surprising and quite frankly is expected. Everyone knew or believed that the Thunder would take at least one game and everyone knew that Chicago would be competitive, especially after the first two games. And I wouldn’t consider either of these games a “steal” by the 8-seed, they were most certainly victories. Read the rest of this entry »
Still Fighting It
March 9, 2010LeBron James missed his second consecutive game last night. Yet the Cavaliers were able to defeat the Spurs. It wasn’t easy, it wasn’t due to luck or chance. It did have something to do with the Spurs not being as advertised this season, but that isn’t the point. Read the rest of this entry »
Hustle and Loyalty
February 24, 2010Zydrunas Ilgauskas is widely expected to be bought out from the Wizards and then resign with the Cavaliers a month after that. Many point to his loyalty to the Cavaliers organization, and the loyalty that is supposedly reciprocated, as an obvious reason that he will be back in Cleveland before Easter.
